After successful surgery to treat a subdural hematoma, a blood clot on the brain, the Argentine great Diego Maradona is recovering, his doctor said late on Tuesday.

A day earlier, Diego Maradona, 60, was admitted to the hospital and needed surgery to treat a clot that is sometimes caused by a head injury that can put pressure on the brain.

Maradona's neurosurgeon and personal physician Leopoldo Luque, told the media outside the clinic where hundreds of fans were gathering that he was able to successfully evacuate the hematoma, and Diego Maradona tolerated the operation very well."

He further explained that the steps now are observation, but it is under control and it's going to depend on how he is doing. He said that the surgery is not really complex, but it's still brain surgery, and the surgery took about 80 minutes.

Due to his delicate general health, the operation was potentially risky, although Luque previously said the procedure was "routine surgery" and that Diego Maradona had been "lucid" and understood and agreed with the surgery procedure.

On Monday, Diego Maradona was admitted to the Ipensa Clinic in La Plata for anaemia and dehydration, before being moved to the Olivos Clinic in the province of Buenos Aires.
