After Edinson Cavani was left out of the travelling squad on Monday, the Uruguayan striker hopes of making his Manchester United debut against former club Paris St Germain in the Champions League were dashed.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced that for Tuesday's opening group stage match, Cavani as well as Captain Harry Maguire, Mason Greenwood, Eric Bailly and Jesse Lingard had skipped the trip to the French capital.
Cavani also needs to focus on his fitness standards while Maguire suffered a minor knock.
Manchester United hopes that their players won't be gone for too long. Hopefully, Harry, Eric, Edinson and Mason will need a few more days of training before they can think about the Chelsea game.
Upon arrival in the United Kingdom, Cavani, who joined United on a free transfer after his PSG contract expired last season, had to isolate himself for 14 days.
As the French club's most prolific scorer with 200 goals, the 33-year-old finished his spell in Paris but has not played since March — before the league season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At Parc des Princes, the stadium where he made his United debut in 2019, teenage forward Greenwood will not feature. But Solskjaer stressed that for the United Premier League clash against Chelsea on Saturday, the England international could recover from his minor injury setback.
In the absence of Maguire, for the first time, United playmaker Bruno Fernandes would captain the side that he discovered while sitting alongside his news conference boss.
Fernandes helped the club make a late push to finish third in last season's Premier League after transferring to United from Sporting Lisbon in January.
This season, the Portuguese midfielder has already scored three goals, including a vital strike in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.
